Reading, Watching, Listening

READING

With both of my girls out of school recently (Clara for two weeks and Sophie for one), I barely had time to read.  Somehow, on our Spring Break trip, I managed to finish Code Name Verity.  This was one of my rare fiction reads for the year.  I have to say that I do quite enjoy historical fiction.  This book was an Honor title for the 2012 Michael L. Printz award.  Code Name Verity is the story of a secret agent captured by the Gestapo in enemy territory and her efforts to evade execution.  I love all the historical detail and I found the story pretty gripping.  This book is a good read and one that I'd definitely recommend to others!

I have several books on the back burner just waiting for some free time. These include Gone Girl and Wonder.  I've been wanting to read both for a long time!

WATCHING

I don't know about you but I love the few months following the Oscars, when all of the nominated films come out on DVD.  Last week we rented and watched both Lincoln and Argo.

Lincoln.  I particularly love books and movies that trigger some interest and further study on a topic. Lincoln was one such movie for me.  In particular, I became very interested in the story of Mary Todd Lincoln.  I had no idea that she and Lincoln had four sons and that three passed away during Mary's lifetime.  She was also sitting right next to Lincoln when he was shot/assassinated.  Can you imagine such tragedy?  Then, after her third son passed away, her eldest and only remaining son had her committed to an asylum.  (How would you not be crazy?) Because of that, they were estranged until shortly before her death.  Um yeah.  After some research online, I requested Jean H. Baker's biography of Mary.  I can't wait to read it!

Argo. I can see why this movie won the Best Picture award.  I was quite young during the Iran Hostage Crisis so I was googling away during the movie.  There were so many "characters" and I had no idea who they were!  So it was nice to get a short little history lesson.  I was so nervous watching the movie that I thought I was going to be sick.  I'm still amazed that Ben Affleck's character was able to pull off the escape of six hostages.  I'm really not sure how those six hostages were able to keep their nerves in check!

LISTENING

I am rather obsessed with this song.  I mean obsessed.  I can't remember the last time I liked a song this much.  The video is horrendous (in my opinion) but just listen to the song and look at something else while it's playing (ha!).  Does anyone love it too?

How about you?  What have you been reading, watching, listening?  Anything good?

Reading, Watching, Listening

In case you've been wondering why my blog posts are so sporadic and infrequent, it's because I've been reading A LOT.  I get so excited when I have a bunch of books lined up on my bedside table screaming for my attention.

READING

Of everything I've read lately, my favorite two books are Clara's War and Simple Living: One Couple's Search for a Better Life.

Clara's War is Clara Kramer's Holocaust survival story.  She survived the war with her parents by living in a bunker under the house of her family's prior housekeeper (it was actually a Jewish home/house that was given to the housekeeper's family after the Jews were kicked out).  Clara lived in that bunker for almost TWO YEARS.  It was so small that not one of its occupants could even stand up straight.  At the most, there were EIGHTEEN people living in this bunker.  For me, the most amazing part of this story is that two young children lived in the bunker with them for most of the time. I cannot even imagine and it is truly a miracle that they all survived. At different times, there were Nazi and SS soldiers/agents living in the house above them.  It is one of the most gripping stories I've ever read and I am so happy I decided to read this book. (I'd decided some time ago to stop reading Holocaust books because I've read so many in my lifetime.  I felt inclined to read this one because my daughter is also named Clara.)  After reading the book I had to GOOGLE around to see if Clara is still alive. It appears she may be because I can't find anything to the contrary.  While researching, I came across this video of Clara and I just had to share it!  She is so precious and I, for one, am just so happy that she survived to tell this remarkable story.

I am now reading Simple Living: One Couple's Search for a Better Life.  This book was published in 1992, long before the Simple Living movement came into being. It's one couple's attempt to simplify their life when they moved to an orchard in Virginia (that just happens to be near my hometown!).  I'm almost finished this book and feel like I might be inclined to write more when I'm done.  A lot of what was written in this book just speaks to me!  If the idea of living more simply appeals to you, you should seriously consider reading this book!!!  I originally heard about this book on Rhonda's blog (a daily read for me!).

WATCHING

Alain and I watched ZERO DARK THIRTY last weekend. FINALLY!  I'd been wanting to see it for so long!  Wow.  I learned a thing or two and, of course, certain scenes were hard to watch, but I am in AWE of agents who do this type of work. In awe and so thankful.  Great movie if you're looking for something good to watch.  We rented it from RedBox.

LISTENING

I'm really into the more rustic, folk-sounding bands that are popular now.  Mumford & Sons, The Lumineers, Imagine Dragons.  I listen to them when I can and turn up the radio FOR SURE when one of their songs comes on.  Very trendy and not too original but it is what it is!  Every once in a while they do play something good on the radio. This one is definitely a favorite:

I also had the pleasure of seeing PINK in concert last weekend.  Oh my!  It kind of blew my mind.  I am so thankful my friend talked me into it.  It certainly didn't disappoint and I look forward to the next time I can see her show!

Reading, Watching, Listening

Wow, I hardly know where to begin with this post.  Somehow I made it through last week with two girls sick with the stomach flu.  I myself became sick on Saturday and it lasted through Monday.  Monday was one of the longest days of my life. I was so severely nauseous that I just lay on the floor for most of the day with Clara crawling all over me.  I may have cried once or twice....out of pure self pity.  But I didn't come here today to wax nostalgic over last week's misery. No, no. I want to forget it ever happened.

READING

I am here today to talk to you about some amazingly GREAT books!!!!!

On January 28th, the American Library Association released it's book/literary awards for 2013.  Well, you know I'm all over that.  I immediately put in all of my HOLD requests at the library for the winning books.  This year I decided to also read the young adult books selections.  Well, I am SO GLAD I did.

Last week two of my hold requests came in.  The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate  and BOMB by Steve Sheinkin.

I read The One and Only Ivan first. Mainly because I am such an animal lover and all I knew about the book was that it was about a gorilla.

Cover of The One and Only Ivan

Before I speak about this book, there are a few things you should know about me:

1.) I adore and am forever fascinated by apes.  I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE them.
2.) Even as a young child, when my parents would take me to visit The National Zoo in Washington, DC, I always secretly wished I could sit in the Great Ape House all day to watch the gorillas (in their sad, bland, cement cages ~ I can hardly imagine anything more depressing!).
3.) A number of years ago, when I did my volunteer work and research at The North Carolina Zoo, I used to spend the last half an hour before the zoo closed, sitting alone by the glass of the gorilla exhibit (in much nicer, grassy, spacious quarters ~ still depressing but WORLDS improved from those National Zoo cages). Every once in a while, I'd experience a connection with one of the females.  It moved my heart.
4.) I studied primatology in the early 2000's.
5.) Jane Goodall has always been an idol of mine.

I read this book in one sitting.  It was that good.  A fast read too.  Alain was sleeping next to me. And, at a certain point in the story, I collapsed into sobs.  The story was just that touching to me and so beautiful.  Katherine Applegate wrote this book for someone just like me.  I was her perfect audience.  I can't even recall the last time a book moved me that much.  If you have a spare few hours, do yourself a favor and read this lovely, touching story.  I don't want to tell you anymore about the story because I feel that it's best to go blindly into a book.

Only after finishing the book did I learn that it was inspired by a real gorilla named Ivan who just happens to reside at the Atlanta Zoo.

Ivan at Zoo Atlanta

{Photo of Ivan by Tammy Jo Dallas}

Yes, I totally foresee a trip there in the near future to observe the lovely beast who inspired Katherine to pen a true masterpiece.  I also plan to buy a hard copy of this book to keep in our private collection.  My girls NEED to read it when they get older!

Ok, moving on.  BOMB.

Where do I begin with BOMB?

Of course I grew up knowing a good deal about atomic bombs, the history behind the making, the race for the US to develop the bomb first, blah, blah, blah.  To be honest, I learned what I HAD to learn and I left it at that.  I don't like anything having to do with warfare, violence, killing of innocent lives, etc.  I debated hard whether or not to actually read the book.  But it just kept coming up in book blogs, reviews, awards.  I caved because I figured a book with worthy of that much decoration had to be something special.  I was right!!!!

I think, in life, sometimes all it takes is someone putting history in the right words.  Steve Sheinkin did that for me.  I owe him a huge thanks!

I read this book in one day.  It literally pained me to have to put it down.  I knew a lot of what I was reading but I found it infinitely more interesting.  I suddenly had this strong desire to learn more, research more.....I guess you could say I was hungry for the facts.  Poor Alain.....for the past few days, I can speak of little else.  He was a History and International Affairs double major so, of course, this is old hat for him.  He finds it quite funny that "a kid's book" is what finally peaked my interest in the subject.  I never was good at writing book reviews but, if you want a nice little summary of the book, visit here.  Janssen used to be a librarian and she's much better at writing up books!  She's actually one of the people who made me cave and finally read the book.  So, so glad!

I am currently reading Empty Without You: The Intimate Letters of Eleanor Roosevelt and Lorena Hickok.   I've always admired Eleanor and yet I am floored after reading this book just how little I really know about her life.  Floored.

I love when I have so many good books to read.....all in a row!

WATCHING

After reading BOMB, Alain was a good sport and watched a short documentary with me on Monday night. I don't want to mention it here because, like I said, it was short and I felt frustrated that it didn't go into more depth and detail.  This morning, because Clara woke me at the crack of dawn (Ggggrrrrr!), I started watching Trinity and Beyond: The Atomic Bomb Movie.  Ever seen it?

This movie starts off with the Trinity testing and then goes on for almost two hours showing footage from the 331 atomic tests the US conducted in the late 40's and all through the 50's.  With each test, I became more and more sick and disgusted.  I turned it off at around 1956.  You see, this is why I didn't want to read BOMB in the beginning.  I will never understand man's need to destroy.  The amount of life, land, water, etc that was destroyed during all of this testing is more than mind boggling to me.  I now feel sad and worried for this country and the world.  My interest in the atomic bomb and it's long, full history is now abated.

If you can recommend something happy, peaceful, relaxing, beautiful to watch, please pass it my way.

LISTENING

I recently discovered The Imagine Dragons. They have a song on the radio (below) and Sophie finds me singing it ALL THE TIME.  I never knew who sang the song ~ I only knew it stuck in my head.  Once I started looking up music of The Imagine Dragons, I realized they were the artists. Give it a listen ~ you just might like it too!!!

Ironically, one of their big hits is a song called RADIOACTIVE. And the setting of that video above looks like nuclear fallout to me! How crazy weird is that?

Reading, Watching, Listening

READING

So I just finished reading this....

About Alice

.....and I was quite touched by this beautiful love letter that Calvin wrote to his late wife, Alice.

Now I'm reading....

Dreamland: Adventures in the Strange Science of Sleep

....and, I'm telling you, this book is fascinating.  I've read a lot of books on sleep. After Sophie was born, I struggled with sleep issues for YEARS.  Oh, it was so horrible.  Thank goodness I'm sleeping like a baby now but I'm still intrigued by what happens once we close our eyes at night.  It's always been an interest of mine, even before I had my own sleep issues. I'm about halfway through this book and I may write more about it once I'm done.  Seriously, I've learned so many cool things!!!  Alain and I have had some interesting conversations about our sleep....

WATCHING

Alain and I just watched....

Marley (2012) Poster

.....and, I have to say, I didn't expect to be so roped in by this documentary.  I guess I didn't know a lot about Bob Marley even though I would consider myself a fan.  Watching this led to many a Google search on the Dreadlock Rasta.  So, as you might have guessed (it's so predictable!).....

LISTENING

I've been listening to....

Legend: The Best Of Bob Marley And The Wailers (New Packaging)

This is one of the 10 CD's I'd want with me if I were deserted on an island.  It would actually make it into my Top 5.  Do you guys ever play that game?  Alain and I often have this discussion.  Maybe I'll do a post one day on my 10 'deserted island CD's'.  (Am I dating myself saying CD's?  Times, they are a changin'!!!)

So, tell me, what have you been reading, watching, listening to????

Reading, Watching, Listening

As I nurse my old guy back to health and help him to navigate the world without the benefit of eyesight, these are the things I'm reading, watching and listening to to comfort my soul.

Oh Anna.  I can't say enough about how much I love and adore Anna Quindlen.  I have no idea why it's taken so long for me to read her memoir but I'm so happy that it's finally in my hands.  I'm about halfway through and I already know I will go back and reread it many times.  Anna, I bow down.

Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake

I'm not watching anything, really.  The list of movies I want to see is crazy long but I am never able to go to the movies.  And I don't watch much TV.  So I'd love some suggestions. What are you guys watching?

I recently discovered The Piano Guys via my Mumford & Sons Pandora station.  If you like Adele, you will LOVE this.  I find is so relaxing and, yes, good for my soul.  They put a classical spin on new hits.  I love The Piano Guys ~ do you?

And, even though it's been overplayed now, I am still madly in love with this song.  It always makes me happy when I hear it.  Sophie often has to ask me to stop singing it.  Oops!

That's it from here.  Hubbell is doing great!  I will possibly post a new photo later on. His wound looks "scary" (Sophie's choice of word) right now and I have a lot of respect for Hubbell's privacy.  When he's looking dapper again, I'll provide an update.  Thanks for all of your kinds words on my last post ~ brought tears to my eyes.  I'm so happy I have some real dog lovers reading my blog!!!

Reading, Watching, Listening

HELLO 2013!!!

As I usher in 2013, I've been reading, watching and listening a lot.  Hence my lack of blog posts.  Here's a peek at what I've been reading, watching and listening to......now, it's your turn, how about you???

READING:

Just finished...

Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail (Oprah's Book Club 2.0)

Now reading...

Grace: A Memoir

With this one on the backburner just waiting....

Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity

WATCHING:

Just finished watching Season 1 of this show.....(thanks, Little Brother!)...

Girls: The Complete First Season

Not sure yet what my opinion is on the show but let's just say that I intend to watch Season 2. (Obvi, we're the ladies! ~ love that!) I'm intrigued by Lena Dunham. She's obviously talented and I LOVE how she puts herself out there.  I admire it, actually. For this reason, I watched her movie...

Tiny Furniture (Criterion Collection)

...but I quickly found myself wishing I'd spent that hour and a half doing something else.  Sorry, Lena.

Also, I recently watched this movie:

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

....and let's just say that I liked it enough to add it as one of my favorites on my Google profile.  I cannot wait to own this on DVD.  And the music is so incredible!

LISTENING:

I have a confession ~ in general, I really do not like children's music.  At all. There are some exceptions, like certain Raffi songs. But I usually stick to artists like Bob Marley or Van Morrison or Miles Davis or Nina Simone....beautiful music that (luckily) appeals to my children as well.  How pleased I have been to discover Elizabeth Mitchell.  My mom bought us both of these CD's....

You Are My Little BirdYou Are My Sunshine

.....and I find myself wondering how I've managed to be a parent for 6+ years without music THIS GOOD. I'm not at all embarrassed to admit that I listen to it even if my children are not in the car.  It's so, so, so beautiful.  I'm hard pressed to even say which of these two CD's I like better.  Elizabeth Mitchell, thank you.

So what am I missing?  Tell me,what are you reading, watching, listing to????

I spent Thursday night with this guy....

The show was just awesome.

The music spectacular.

I don't know of another band that I can say sounds better live.

My friend, Barb, invited me to the concert and treated me to the ticket ("because we don't get to go out enough") and, I'm telling you, it was good for my soul.

During one song (Free.....Free As We'll Ever Be), I remember looking at the stars, feeling the music and thinking, "I am so damned happy to be alive".

All concerts should be like that!

Suburban Field Journal

Did you know that we have a theme song out in the suburbs? Yes, you must have known this post was coming. It's the song "Little Boxes". It was written all the way back in 1962 by Malvina Reynolds but most people know it as the theme/opening song from the show Weeds. I think it perfectly captures the spirit, or rather lack thereof, out here in the 'burbs.

Speaking of Weeds....I always thought the opening sequence was rather genius. In Seasons 2 & 3, a different group or artist performed the song for each show. As I love music, I couldn't wait to see what was coming next. In case you've never seen Weeds, you can find a video of the opening sequence here.

Why Georgia?

Yesterday was "any given Thursday". Sophie and I had plans to meet Grandma in Greensboro for lunch. Sophie was going to try out her new DVD player for the car that Grandma & Grandpa had given her as a 4th birthday present. (Yes, it really is more of a gift for Mom & Dad, isn't it?) So, assuming that I would have some peace & quiet on this particular drive with child, maybe my first since having Sophie, I decided to choose some nice CDs to listen to. Driving is one true pleasure and luxury in my life and, to me, there isn't much better than cruising down a highway on a sunny day with really good music blaring.

As you've probably already guessed, the way there was a BUST. Sophie isn't used to watching TV in the car. She watched for 10 minutes then declared that she was DONE and asked to play with her cars. For the next almost 2 hours I had to hear this.....

Why this taking so long?
I don't like these boring highways.
ANOTHER long highway?
When are we going to get there?
I wanna' see Grandma.

All in that particularly grating whiny voice. When I arrived at lunch, I was sitting on my last nerve. Whew.

I lucked out on the way home. We hung out with Grandma for a couple of hours and she and I made sure Sophie was worn out. Good move. The entire 2-hour drive home.......(angels singing)......she watched Go Diego, Go......and I didn't hear a peep out of her. It was heavenly. A few times I even caught her singing out loud. Precious.

And me? Well, I popped in the "Any Given Thursday" CD from John Mayer. I'd chosen it because it WAS any given Thursday and the CD was just calling out to me from the shelf. This is the live CD that was recorded during one of his shows in Birmingham, Alabama.

Album Cover

Well, I hadn't heard this CD in years. And I had totally forgotten just how good it is. How good he was. How much I really liked and respected his talent. The rendition of "Why Georgia" on this CD is unreal. The guitar riffs in the intro. The "I'm Portable" prelude. Fill me up, take me out, I'm portable. I love it. And, honestly, it was just the right song on the right day. I WAS driving on 85. I'm currently stuck inside the gloom. Isn't it just human to sometimes daydream about keeping the car in drive and leaving all this $hit behind? And yes, I too wonder sometimes about the outcome. And, if you know me at all, you know that there is ALWAYS something stirring in my soul. Am I living it right?

Long after the song ended I found myself still thinking about John Mayer. I mean what the hell happened to him? I couldn't help but think about the time some friends brought over the DVD from this very CD that I was listening to. And how I sat glued to the screen. He was like an elixir. Watching him play guitar was so intoxicating. Those baggy jeans. Standing on the oriental carpets. Floppy hair all over the place. He was damned good.

Fast forward a few years and he's just an a-hole of gargantuan magnitudes. Indiscreet. Full of himself. Inappropriate. Desperate for attention. Really? John, we all liked you better when you acted like a mensch. I couldn't even tell you if he still has talent. Nowadays I do my best NOT to listen to him.

Image via NYPost

So all I can ask is this:

Why, tell me why why why why why, why why Georgia why......is John Mayer such a tool?

I am obsessed.

Has it ever happened to you that you lose track of a song and then rediscover it years later? Oh and it feels so good. It's SO GOOD....how could you have ever forgotten about it? Well, that's just happened to me recently. Funnily enough, we were having dinner at WaterStone in Lynchburg (love that place) last month and it was playing on the restaurant speakers. I couldn't believe my ears. I LOVE THAT SONG. As soon as I got back home, I downloaded that sucker on ITunes. And I have played it almost every single day since. Not once, not twice, but OVER AND OVER (....) AGAIN. And LOUD. And I belt the lyrics out until I am just about hoarse. My poor dogs. They have sensitive ears. They must be SO TIRED of this song. They look at me like I'm half crazy. If they could talk, I'm sure they would say something like, "Mom, you are off your trolley". When it comes to music, I am pretty consistent....if there's a good quality song that deals with unrequited love or getting your heart stomped on, I will pretty much love it. I have a very tall guy named Jeff to thank for that. If you've never had your heart really broken, you will not be able to appreciate this song like the rest of us. But, if you have and you know what real hurt feels like, I recommend the below. It will add at least a few hours to your life. It is better than even the very best therapy. What a truly beautiful and sad song. A real classic. My poor husband doesn't even know it. But me.......I love it.

1.) Google "Misunderstanding lyrics"
2.) Click on "Play song from Lala.com" in blue font.
3.) Adjust your speakers to play as loudly as possible.
4.) Sing at the top of your lungs. Lyrics below.
5.) Allow yourself to crack up laughing at your God awful singing voice.
6.) Feel free to look around every once in a while to make sure no one else is listening. But this is much more effective if you do it when no one else is home.
7.) It feels better if you play some guitar on the side of your leg.
8.) Repeat, as necessary.
9.) Tell me it doesn't feel damn good.

You can thank me later. How could I have lost this song? If I were a famous singer, I would remake this song.

Note to self: Add this song to the list of "All Things English" that you love.

LYRICS:
There must be some misunderstanding.
There must be some kind of mistake.
I waited in the rain for hours.
And you were late.

Now it's not like me to say the right thing.
But you could've called to let me know.
I checked your number twice, don't understand it.
So I went home.

Well I've been waiting for this weekend.
I thought that maybe we could see a show.
Never dreamed I'd have this feeling.
Ah but seeing you is believing.
That's why I don't know why you didn't show up that night.

Oh there must be some misunderstanding.
There must be some kind of mistake.
I was waiting in the rain for hours.
And you were late.

Since then I've been running around trying to find you.
I went to the places that we always go.
I rang your house but got no answer.
Jumped in my car. I went round there.
I still don't believe it.
He was just leaving.

Oh there must be some misunderstanding.
There must be some kind of mistake.
There must be some misunderstanding.
Yes, there must be some kind of mistake.
There must be, there must be oh oh.
Misunderstanding.
There must be, there must be oh oh.
A misunderstanding.
